MRCP(UK) stands for Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. It is a postgraduate medical diploma assessed through written and clinical examinations. The examination pathway includes Part 1, Part 2 Written and PACES.

What are the three examinations?

  • Part 1: assesses medical knowledge and clinical science through best-of-five questions.
  • Part 2 Written: focuses on the application of clinical knowledge, including investigation, diagnosis and management.
  • PACES: assesses practical clinical skills, including examination and communication.

Pass Part 1 first. Once the pass is confirmed, Part 2 Written and PACES may be taken in either order.

Who can apply for Part 1?

The Federation states that candidates must have graduated at least 12 months before the Part 1 examination date. It recommends at least 12 months of medical employment. Check the official eligibility and qualification-document requirements for your circumstances before applying.

How should you approach preparation?

Begin with the exam format and syllabus, then set a realistic study routine around your work. Learn a topic, practise applying it to questions and review errors before moving on. As coverage grows, add mixed practice and timed mocks.

Is a course compulsory?
